Foo Fighters "Everything or Nothing At All" Tour

The Opportunity

In 2024, Foo Fighters embarked on the “Everything or Nothing At All” Tour to support their 11th studio album, But Here We Are. As one of the most beloved rock bands of the 21st century, their tour spanned a diverse range of venues—from large indoor arenas to outdoor festival stages and stadiums—presenting a unique challenge for Lighting Designer Dan Hadley. The goal was to create a lighting rig that could adapt to various stage setups without compromising the energy and presence that define Foo Fighters’ live performances. The lighting needed to be powerful, versatile, and capable of enhancing the band’s dynamic setlist, which ranges from hard-hitting rock anthems to mellow acoustic ballads.

The Solution

To meet these demands, Dan Hadley deployed a versatile rig featuring over 100 Martin MAC One fixtures, known for their compactness, durability, and innovative design. The MAC One’s ability to serve as a beam, wash, and eye-candy fixture made it a perfect choice for a tour that required adaptability across multiple venue types. The MAC One’s high-intensity beam of 375,000 cd, combined with its custom-made 120W RGBL LED engine and eclectic Fresnel lens, enabled the lighting team to produce powerful beams, lush washes, and unique visual effects that matched the band’s high-energy performances.

The MAC One fixtures were strategically placed to illuminate the band overhead and downstage, as well as to frame the video screen behind the band. The fixtures’ lightweight design and compatibility with Martin’s VDO Grid Mount System and accessories facilitated quick and seamless setups, allowing the lighting team to adapt to different stage configurations efficiently. The responsiveness of the MAC One, particularly its rapid zoom and shutter speeds, allowed Hadley to synchronize lighting effects with the band’s improvisational setlists. For instance, during performances of “These Days,” a single MAC Ultra with lavender and amber beams was used to complement the quieter moments, while rotating shutter cassettes added dynamic effects during an impromptu cover of The Beatles’ “Blackbird.”

Throughout the summer leg of the tour, the MAC One fixtures demonstrated exceptional reliability and performance. Despite the demanding schedule and diverse venues, only three out of 120 fixtures needed to be replaced, showcasing the durability and efficiency of the MAC One system.

The Result

The integration of the Martin MAC One fixtures transformed the lighting design for Foo Fighters’ “Everything or Nothing At All” Tour, delivering a visually stunning experience that elevated the energy and atmosphere of each performance. The adaptability of the MAC One allowed the lighting team to maintain a consistent visual impact across a wide range of venues, from festival stages to stadiums, ensuring that every audience enjoyed the full intensity of the Foo Fighters’ live show.

Dan Hadley praised the MAC One’s speed and versatility, emphasizing how its rapid zoom and responsive features enhanced the dynamics of each performance. The ability to quickly adjust lighting to match the band’s improvisations ensured a seamless and engaging experience for fans.

Additionally, Hadley highlighted the exceptional support provided by Martin, describing it as a relationship he greatly values. The reliability of the MAC One fixtures, combined with Martin’s support, enabled the lighting team to focus on creativity rather than troubleshooting, ensuring that each show was delivered without compromise.

The success of the MAC One fixtures on this tour not only reinforced the Foo Fighters’ reputation for delivering electrifying live performances but also showcased the cutting-edge capabilities of Martin’s lighting technology in creating unforgettable concert experiences.
