Integrated Systems Europe (#6Q900) – BARCELONA — As a lead up to ISE 2026, Martin Professional has introduced Martin Macula, a remote follow spot system designed to transform standard moving lights into precision-controlled tracking fixtures for performers and/or objects on stage. The system addresses long-standing operational, safety and ergonomic challenges associated with conventional follow spot workflows, particularly in live performance, touring and sporting environments.

Martin Macula replaces height-based follow spot operation with a ground-based control solution. From a single base station, operators can control one or multiple fixtures simultaneously with smooth, responsive movement, while maintaining a real-time visual reference that simulates being positioned directly at the fixture. This approach reduces operator fatigue, improves consistency and eliminates the safety risks associated with elevated platforms.

At the core of the system is a high-resolution fluid head encoder, paired with ergonomic handles, and an integrated intuitive touchscreen interface. The base station allows operators to manage pan, tilt and zoom movement directly, while additional parameters including dimming, color and frost can also be controlled locally when required. Configuration and setup are deliberately streamlined, allowing efficient operation with minimal training while maintaining professional-grade performance standards.

Movement control can be dynamically assigned, allowing movement or parameter control to transfer between console and base station on a cue-by-cue basis during a show. Fixtures fitted with cameras provide direct visual feedback to the operator, while additional fixtures without cameras can follow along in sync, enabling consistent multi-angle tracking of a performer or object. Presets and Fixture Banks can be created to adjust system behavior throughout a production, supporting flexible workflows across different show segments.

Macula works extremely well with the Martin MAC Ultra Performance, MAC Viper XIP and MAC Encore Two fixtures, which have been optimized for smooth and responsive movement. But, Macula is fully brand-agnostic, allowing any suitable moving head fixture to be used as a follow spot and fitted with a camera. Network infrastructure is intentionally simplified, with camera feeds and control data running over a single network and no dedicated video cabling required between fixtures and the base station.

The system also supports PosiStageNet output, allowing XYZ position data for performers or objects to be shared with third-party applications, opening integration opportunities for advanced tracking and automation workflows.

It is compatible with Martin NFC (Near Field Communication)-enabled fixtures, including MAC Viper XIP with many more fixtures planned for the future. This free app is available for iOS and Android mobile devices.

While similar to the Companion Desktop application, Companion Mobile utilizes NFC to establish wireless communications to further simplify and ease fixture configuration. The advantage of the NFC interface is that fixtures can be configured without the need to power them on. Even when fixtures are still sitting inside their flightcase, a simple tap of a smartphone against the fixture’s display is all that’s needed to configure fixtures.

Companion Mobile seamlessly synchronizes with Martin’s library over the Internet, eliminating the need for manual downloads. Additionally, it automatically synchronizes with the Martin-made GDTF files on the GDTF share. This provides access to all fixture details such as DMX Modes, DMX Channel Listings, Gobo Loadouts and more. GDTF files can be exported directly from Companion for use with any GDTF-compatible software.

At-Turaif District in ad-Dir'iyah: A Masterpiece of Historical Illumination

DIRIYAH, Saudi Arabia — The ancient city of At-Turaif, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is now a stunning nighttime spectacle, due to the artistry of Speirs Major Light Architecture (SMLA) supported by 3,200 lighting fixtures by Martin Professional.

This lighting project brings to life the epic scale and historical significance of At-Turaif with a beautifully layered tapestry of golden light. Speirs Major’s design articulates the stories hidden in the layers of buildings, courtyards, and archaeological remnants, capturing and reflecting the site's extraordinary spirit to create a remarkable living national monument.

At-Turaif, dating back to the 15th century, was the first capital of the Saudi state. Perched on a raised site at the edge of the ad-Dir'iyah oasis, in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula, it includes the remains of many palaces and an urban settlement. The lighting design by SMLA enhances the site's historical essence, turning it into a nighttime masterpiece.

The lighting fixtures utilized in the At-Turaif project come from Martin Professional’s Exterior Linear and Exterior Wash families. These product lines are designed for demanding environments, ensuring longevity and reliable performance. Key features include ease of installation, deep saturated colors, smart infrastructure for individual fixture control, and durability in extreme conditions.

"The opportunity to create the after-dark experience of such a special and significant site is a rare honour,” said Keith Bradshaw, CEO of Speirs Major Light Architecture. “Our previous work on exceptional sites like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and the Dom Tower in Utrecht informed our approach at At-Turaif. We are fascinated by the stories and memories that live within these unique places and how we can use light as a narrative tool to draw them out, creating a meaningful connection between people, place, and architecture.

The feeling of walking within At-Turaif feels literally like stepping back in time. The design amplifies this sense of another time and place, animating the subtle tonal variations in the natural materials to feel as if they are lit by flickering torch light. Finding the right quality of light was crucial. SMLA tested a huge range of tones to achieve the exact shade of golden light that makes the mud-brick walls glow beautifully and naturally.

Addressing the sheer scale of At-Turaif, SMLA leveraged their extensive experience in city light master planning, breaking the project into phases and zones. They carefully analyzed the site from all important viewing angles, ensuring that the site remains a major focal point in the landscape when viewed from Diriyah Gate across Wadi Hanifah. Balancing the external identity and the internal experience of the monument was key to the design.

Bradshaw elaborates on the design approach: "Having identified the surfaces, facades, streets, and courtyards that shape the site's most important views and experiences, we used a palette of differing light intensities to create a richly interwoven tapestry of layers and zones. This design supports locals and visitors in understanding and appreciating the site, while revealing its beauty.”

The Jubilee initially set sail from Galveston, Texas, USA in December 2023 and currently offers six- to nine-day cruises with destinations throughout the Western Caribbean Sea.

String Cheese Incident Celebrates 30th Anniversary with Series of New Year’s Eve Concerts Powered by Martin

OAKLAND, Calif.—String Cheese Incident recently rang in 2024 with a series of 30th anniversary New Year’s Eve concerts that were also notable as being the very first live events in the world to feature brand new Martin MAC One compact moving head fixtures provided by Christie Lites.

Formed in Colorado in 1993, String Cheese Incident (SCI) is an iconic American jam band whose concerts regularly draw thousands of fans across the country to listen to their unique and unpredictable live shows that seamlessly blend bluegrass, rock, electronica, calypso, country, funk, jazz, Latin, progressive rock, reggae and psychedelia. SCI is known for pulling out all the stops for their annual New Year's Eve Incident concerts, and with 2023 marking their 30th anniversary, the band really wanted to make this year’s edition feel special.

The band once again turned to veteran lighting designers Michael Smalley and Chris Ruppel to design and implement a rig that could not only support multiple sets worth of eclectic live performances but also bring fresh lighting effects to heighten the impact of the momentous occasion. Smalley and Ruppel designed and specified a versatile and powerful lighting rig exclusively featuring cutting-edge Martin instruments provided by Christie Lites, including a world premiere appearance from brand new Martin MAC One compact moving head fixtures.

“Doing lights for SCI is drastically different from mainstream concerts,” said Smalley. “With SCI, I need every light to be able to accomplish a lot of different things. I need a single fixture to be a spot, a hard edge, a soft edge, zoom really wide, and be able to get funky and weird. I ask for a lot of versatility out of the fixtures. They need to bring a lot to the table. On top of that, we want to use the nicest gear possible. That’s why we use Martin.”

Smalley and Ruppel’s SCI New Years Eve rig included 26 MAC Ultra Performance fixtures, six MAC Ultra Wash fixtures, 24 ERA 800 Performance fixtures, 14 MAC Aura PXL fixtures and eight MAC Aura XB fixtures. Because the team designed the rig for maximum flexibility, each fixture was selected for its ability to perform a wide range of roles and provide a variety of special effects and output levels to create a natural texture between the different fixtures used. According to Smalley, the Martin rig fulfilled every need perfectly.

“For New Year’s Eve we used both MAC Ultra Performances and ERA 800s as profiles, because they have different outputs and layer together nicely. We used the MAC Ultra Washes doing wide angle supportive stuff, Ultra has become a big part of how we present the show. We have to have those now since we started using them. The Aura PXLs give us individual pixel control that pairs nicely with our P3 control system, which allows us to implement video effects and crossfade that with the lighting.”

In addition to the aforementioned Martin fixtures, Smalley and Ruppel’s rig featured 32 brand new MAC One compact moving head fixtures, making SCI’s 2023 New Year’s Eve concerts notable for being the first live event in the world to feature them.

“The MAC One is wonderful,” said Smalley. “The Fresnel lens allows you to have a traditional par can output, it doesn’t feel like an LED. It feels organic. Then it has the Aura technology to give the face a prismatic effect. You get the awesomeness out of an eye candy LED fixture and not always have to use actual beam output. It fulfills this role that used to be part of our stage lighting lexicon but it fell by the wayside when the new LED stuff came out. Now we can bring it back to that organic feel while still having cool and funky modern effects. I used just the Aura Fresnel lens for about 80 to 90% of the show, while I pushed light out of the beam a lot less. It gave me the opportunity to have the face of the MAC One fill up the negative space without sending photon torpedoes of light down onto the band. It gave me a dynamic range of looks I can be in. I can have them at 10% or 50% output and get that range, while never losing the body of the rig.”

MAC One is a revolutionary beam, wash and eye-candy fixture, featuring a captivating Fresnel lens that transforms any stage or event into an extraordinary visual spectacle. Smalley and Ruppel utilized the Fresnel lens to deliver eye-candy and depth that translated both in person and on camera.

“These fixtures look really nice on camera in the background,” said Ruppel. “You can aim them directly at the camera and they don’t blow out the camera lens. They fill in the dark spaces between their shoulders and over their head, which gives a sense of depth. I think we’re going to see a lot more comedy specials and television shoots using these MAC Ones as that corner light. I would put it on any presentation or talking head scenario. It’s such a versatile fixture, you can use it for rock shows or anything else. It’s this ideal small frame fixture that’s easy to work with, easy to program, and fits into a tiny space that bigger lights don’t fit into.”

Smalley and Ruppel’s design also utilized a computer-based Martin P3 control system that unlocked the potential of every P3-compatible fixture in the rig while saving hours of time programming or tweaking show files.

“With MVR support now implemented in P3, we were able to go from our design in the drafting software to a usable show file in 15 minutes,” said Ruppel. “I’m not exaggerating. I put a flash drive in, loaded it, clicked a few buttons, it was super intuitive and user-friendly. MVR was done in a way that it goes from console to P3, running the media server on a combined laptop which supports a minimum amount of computers and cabling at front-of-house. It’s cool that you can have P3 on your own machine, you don’t have to bring an entire piece of hardware for it. It runs on the same network of the lights themselves, which maximizes our ability to get into the rig and use it quickly without spending hours pulling your hair out in tech support.”

Smalley emphasized the importance of his long-standing relationship with Martin over the years, and the confidence gained when he has Martin fixtures in the rig.

“I’ve been a huge Martin lighting fan for the entirety of my career,” said Smalley. “It’s always been the aspirational gear out there. When Martin stuff comes out it’s really exciting. Martin supports real artists. They make lights geared towards artists and creators to do their best work. There’s a lot of back and forth love and help and generosity and support with Martin. It puts me in a real positive place to be a creator. This New Year's Eve run of shows was the best I’ve ever felt about running lights in my entire career. There was a sense of calm, ease and stability that allowed me to be right in the moment. I knew every piece of gear was going to work. Nothing had to be changed or teched over the three days. With the Martin rig, I have the confidence to just do my job and everything is awesome.”

Headliner Magazine and Enter Shikari Supercharge the Pioneer Club with HARMAN Professional Solutions

LONDON—HARMAN Professional Solutions recently partnered with Headliner Magazine to replace the legendary Pioneer Club’s aging live sound system with a supercharged JBL Professional SRX Series sound reinforcement system just in time for a headlining performance by Rudimental.

The Pioneer Club is a youth and community venue located in St. Albans just miles from the city of London. In addition to housing a historic music venue and the UK’s oldest indoor skatepark, the Pioneer Club is a registered UK charity, and has a long history of helping young people, stretching back to re-housing displaced children during World War Two. Since opening in the 1960s, the Pioneer Club’s all-ages venue has helped launch the careers of musical icons like the Zombies and Enter Shikari while hosting concerts by Declan McKenna, Bring Me The Horizon, Trash Boat and many more.

In a year that’s seen Enter Shikari reach number one in the UK albums chart, the hometown band saw an opportunity to reinvest in the community that gave them their earliest opportunities. Following discussions with Headliner Magazine CEO Paul Watson, the band ended up partnering with the music and tech media brand to renovate the Pioneer Club’s existing 400-cap music venue as well as converting an underutilized common room into a new 120-cap venue and café bar called the Suet Yard.

In order to support and better accommodate bands on the modern UK touring circuit, Watson and Headliner contacted HARMAN Professional Solutions to replace the Pioneer Club’s aging sound and lighting systems with state-of-the-art solutions from JBL Professional, Crown, AKG and Martin. HARMAN shared Watson’s vision for the Pioneer Club and agreed to become an ally for the venue.

“I was approached by friends in the rock band Enter Shikari about the possibility of teaming up to revitalize the Pioneer Club,” said Watson. “The Pioneer is very close to their hearts. They knew that Headliner is an audio brand that skews music industry and pro AV industries. We had conversations, and then in July we partnered with HARMAN. HARMAN saw and shared our vision. By the end of September, the new installation was complete.”

The Pioneer Club’s new sound system consists of sixteen JBL SRX910 line array speakers, suspended eight per side, with low end provided by two ground-stacked pairs of JBL SRX928S dual subwoofers. Four JBL PRX908 speakers provide flexible onstage monitoring, while two JBL PRX915 speakers are used as DJ monitors. An additional two JBL PRX912 loudspeakers supply delay coverage to the VIP balcony.

Meanwhile at front-of-house, a Soundcraft Vi1000 digital mixing console delivers space saving, world-class audio mixing capability with pristine audio quality, roadworthy reliability and an intuitive user interface for streamlined operation. Onstage, a plethora of AKG microphones ensure every note is captured in painstaking detail, while the addition of a Martin lighting rig heightens each performance with eye-popping visual appeal.

“I come from an audio background myself,” said Watson. “I’ve done live sound,and I’m a studio engineer as well. This JBL rig is a really great sounding rig; it feels very controlled with a very smooth low end. The artists were buzzing about it after the show. The HARMAN package has upped the room’s production value enormously. The previous system was pretty decent, but the SRX rig has certainly supercharged the venue.”

The system had its first outing at an inaugural event headlined by award-winning drum-and-bass group Rudimental on Saturday October 7 with support from 220 Kid and Lo Lauren. The event raised funds for the Pioneer Music Charity and the venue itself.

“Helping to preserve grassroots venues like The Pioneer Club is something we are passionate about,” said the members of Rudimental in a joint statement. “By headlining this fundraiser at The Pioneer Club, we wanted to help raise awareness of the venue, the charity, and all that it is striving to achieve in terms of music education, entertainment, and providing a safe creative place for young people.”

According to Watson, the Pioneer Club’s new HARMAN sound and lighting rig represents just the first phase of Headliner and Enter Shikari’s plans to position the legendary venue at the center of a hub that supports the local music community while generating revenue to sustain the Pioneer charity, which remain the organization’s top priority.

“We have an opportunity to turn what was once an iconic venue back into a great venue,” said Watson. “And this initiative will also help to support key local groups including Services for Young People and the National Autistic Society, all of whom will be able to utilize the space. Then from a core Headliner perspective, we will launch two Academies during Q2; these will be dedicated to music and pro-audio education, to help raise awareness to young people that they can find a route into these industries and build a career for themselves.”

Since installation was completed, the Pioneer Club’s new HARMAN sound and lighting rigs have powered numerous concerts by independent rock bands on the local and touring UK circuits as well as supporting events for high-profile clients such as TikTok and the MOBO Awards.

“It’s easy to forget you’re in a relatively small venue given the importance that’s clearly been given to the overall production,” said Dani Simmonett, United Talent Agency. “The sound is crisp and clear, and acoustics don’t have the issues that many smaller venues have. I’ve had the opportunity of seeing a variety of artists with different setups at The Pioneer Club since the new JBL rig went in, and it’s working extremely well across the board.”

Historic Tenantry Column Gets New Life With Martin Lighting

ALNWICK, England—To provide the historic Tenantry Column with a modern and weather-resistant lighting rig, architect James Ritchie installed a range of Martin Exterior fixtures.

Erected in 1816, the Tenantry Column in the town center of Alnwick pays tribute to Hugh Percy, 2nd Duke of Northumberland, for his efforts to reduce rent increases during the post-Napoleonic depression. In 1977, the column received a Grade 1 status as a listed building, the highest level of protection and preservation for historical structures in the United Kingdom. Northumberland Estates, were undertaking a multi-tier restoration project for the Tenantry Column, part of which included replacing the defunct lighting system. To accomplish this task, Ritchie worked with Northumberland Estates, Martin Professional and Illuminate Design as well as Pickard Electricals to install durable and versatile Martin Exterior Linear Graze Quad and Exterior Wash lights.

“Our job was to replace the defunct lighting installation that was no longer operational due to age and extensive vandalism,” said Ritchie. “The main priorities for the design were to illuminate the column, base plinth and lions in a manner sympathetic to its Grade 1 listed status, take advantage of improvements in technology to install a more energy efficient system, and to incorporate RGBW lighting to ensure the correct blend of light and accentuate the stone’s color and shape. We also wanted to install a DMX controller so the column can be lit with different colors for specific occasions.”

Designed to illuminate any structure and withstand any weather condition, the Martin Exterior Linear Graze Quad uses quad-color LEDs for superior color mixing directly at the lens and to avoid multi-colored shadows. Along with its highly flexible color mixing and 0–100% intensity control, the Exterior Linear also sports IP66-rated housing, allowing the lights to thrive for years to come in any weather condition. For the Tenantry Column, Ritchie specified Near, Wide, and Asymmetric variants of the Exterior Linear and Wash within protective enclosures to deter vandalism.

Along with the Exterior Linear Graze QUAD , Martin Exterior Wash fixtures also provide the Tenantry Column with additional, wide-reaching coverage. The Wash lights offer uniform color mixing with six beam angle options and the same quad-color LEDs found in the Exterior Linear within compact, IP66-rated enclosures. The wash lights deliver up to 4900 lumens at full white while the smaller ones reach up to 1300 lumens at full white, allowing for ample coverage and color blending even within limited spaces. The resulting lighting rig brings new life to the Tenantry Column that’s guaranteed to last for years to come.

“The Martin fittings were chosen for the quality of build, performance and durability,” added Ritchie. “The initial response by Martin to my enquiry was excellent and the subsequent service, despite the pandemic, was good. The installation has been very well received and had good social media coverage when it reopened. The local community seems to be delighted to have the column lit again and the client, Northumberland Estates, is very pleased with the quality of the scheme.”

Accessory Adaptations
With the optional fourbar accessory, MAC One fixtures can be transported, rigged, unrigged, and cabled in blocks of four, saving time when deploying several fixtures. An optional grid mount adapter enables the fixtures to be rigged in (self-supported) lines and matrices for creation of a “wall of light” without needing a custom rigging structure. Lines and matrices can contain a mix of MAC One and VDO Atomic Bold and Dot fixtures.

Connection is Key
Control the fixtures with a mix of Video and DMX using DMX, Art-Net, sACN and P3 connections. With P3 Control you can easily reduce the needed DMX channels / console parameters and make the most of the easy setup, mapping and addressing via the Martin P3 System Controller. Video can be mapped onto Beam, Aura or both.
