Belgian Cathedral resurrected with Martin Exterior 600’s

In Liège, the biggest city in the French speaking part of Belgium, an ancient Gothic cathedral was surrounded by scaffolding and draped in canvas.

The Saint Lambert Cathedral was destroyed during the French Revolution 200 years ago, but in its day was one of the biggest Gothic buildings of its kind in the world, even bigger than Notre Dame in Paris.

The city of Liège decided to honor this city’s lost treasure by creating a replica of the church’s « heart ». This small piece of what was once an enormous construction is situated in exactly the same location as it was centuries ago. The temporary construction is 30 meters wide, 20 meters deep and has a height of 42 meters. There is a staircase which leads visitors to a balcony at 16.5m, and for the daring another viewpoint is located at 34.5m. Located in the main city square, thousands pass it daily.

At night, the entire construction is lit by 10 Exterior 600’s with control coming from the Martin ProScenium.

The project was supported by Duncan Verstraeten, EVDV’s (Martin’s Belgian distributor) architectural specialist, who did the calculations and field work along with production manager Benoit.

The positive reactions Mr. Smith has received from the city’s town hall has convinced him to invest even more time and manpower in the architectural field. Already several other projects have been started as a direct result of this stunning piece of city beautification. Mr. Smith is also pleased to see the new Exterior 300 with the asymmetrical (90° by 70°) reflector.
