Denmark’s Exclusive Klubben

September 23, 2003

Located at Skovriderkroen, a traditional Danish restaurant situated amid the exclusive neighborhoods of Charlottenlund just north of Copenhagen, Klubben is an intimate, up-scale lounge for young jetsetters and those who just like to surround themselves with the finer things in life.

Owned and operated by Le Sommelier, who took over the restaurant and nightclub last summer, Klubben now boasts more than just a beautiful ocean view thanks to a recent refurbishment. Inside, the 500+ capacity club is dressed in quiet shades of brown and white, faint complements to the building’s elegant outdoor façade. Elements such as decorative stone mosaic used throughout the club, including at the main bar (one of three), which also features an aquarium backdrop, add to the club’s unique identity.

A key element of the refurbishment project however was a professional lighting and sound system. Prior to the refurbishment, the club’s lighting consisted of eight Martin RoboScan 812 scanners, but with talk of raising the club’s stature, it became obvious that new atmospheric lighting was needed. Martin’s local representative, Martin Scandinavia, was called in to lend their expertise.

Lighting Designer Frank Ovesen helped create a comfortable yet exclusive atmosphere for the club using Martin Architectural Alien 05 color changers. Some 42 of the small, adjustable recessed lights were placed throughout the club, both in the main downstairs area and in the upper balcony. They are mostly used to decorate walls, adding a layer of warmth to the seating areas and indeed the entire club.

The Aliens are recessed in the ceiling as downlights and in walls, next to sofas, as uplighting. The Alien color mixes with subtle amounts of ambient lighting that permeates the club. “Although the owners wanted a system that was capable of changing colors, generally the Alien’s are programmed to wash the walls in warm color shades,” comments Frank. “But there is the possibility of projecting other colors as well, which they do from time to time.” The Aliens are controlled from a Martin 2510 playback unit.

A large dancefloor area is central to the club. Above the dancefloor, at a trim height of about 6 meters, hangs a Eurotruss system with Martin MAC 250 and 300 moving heads complemented by Martin Wizard effect lights. Adjacent to the dancefloor is a large raised podium with additional seating. Here pattern effects from additional MAC 250s decorate the sofas on top of color wash from more MAC 300s. MX-10 scanners and an Atomic 3000 strobe provide the more upbeat effects while a pair of Jem TechnoHaze supplies the atmospheric mid-air haze canopy. All lighting is controlled via a Martin LightJockey (club version). Bang Production of Copenhagen supplied the lighting equipment through Martin Scandinavia.

Resident DJs requested a large DJ monitor for the 4-meter raised DJ booth, and that’s what they got with a digitally powered, 15 inch Mach M-Flex 15.

You’d be hard pressed to find a more exclusive club in the country, yet the Danish tradition of having a good time in a relaxed atmosphere certainly hasn’t been lost. Klubben includes all the necessary amenities – warm candles, comfortable sofas, a selection of fine cigars, a strict dress code, memberships and, oh yes, reservations please. With the ideal combination of quality and coziness, two of Denmark’s most treasured values, there is no better place to dance the Danish night away.
