Hong Kong’s Cultural and New World Centres
October 24, 2002
How do you get your building noticed in a sea of modern skyscrapers? Martin Professional Hong Kong has the answer in a pair of eye-catching high profile projects.
Hong Kong Cultural Centre
The Hong Kong Cultural Centre is a prominent building that occupies the former site of the Kowloon Railway Station. Located in Tsim Sha Tsui, it is an important site for opera, drama and art.
The cultural building features a distinctive winged, ski-sloped roofline that has always been a prominent daytime landmark in this city of modern skyscrapers.
Home of concert halls, theatres and galleries, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre is now an eye-catching night time landmark as well thanks to the installation of 18 Martin Exterior 600 color changers.
Controlled via a Martin LightJockey software control package, continuous color wash is projected onto the distinctive roofline of the building, creating a lively and attractive atmosphere along the riverside. In fact, the quality of the effect lighting is so vivid that, even if you stand on the opposite shoreline, the color change is clearly visible. And because the Hong Kong Cultural Centre is a popular spot for both locals and visitors, the publicity generated from the Martin architectural effect lighting has been extraordinary.
New World Centre
Martin Hong Kong has also been involved in the exterior lighting of a modern shopping and entertainment center in Tsim Sha Tsui, the New World Centre. The New World Centre underwent a HK$300 million renovation program that incorporated major exterior enhancements including a new cladding, entrance canopy, and dramatic feature wall lit by 33 Exterior 600s.
The Exterior illumination has created a remarkable focal point for the area as both pedestrians and drivers-by are attracted to the extraordinary color change that has suddenly modernized the old-style shopping centre. In addition, inside, a bright and lively atmosphere has been created with Martin MAC 600s for the open walkways and spectacular oval atrium.
