Kuala Lumpur sees the awakening of Sangria & Nouvo

June 26, 2002

Nuovo and Sangria, Names that conjure up images of Mediterranean climes, are the new names in the Malaysian bar and club scene, situated in Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle on Jalan Sultan Ismail.

The venues, based on the terrazzo/baroque theme, are situated in a three storey, purpose built building with Sangria occupying the ground floor and Nuovo taking up the upper portion of the building. The location, at the crossroads of Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Ramlee ensure that the full impact of the stylish exterior is seen by many passing (prospective) customers daily., The perforated stainless steel façade is beautifully lit using Martin Exterior 600 to create an ever changing "alive" frontage, a frontage that changes on occasions by virtue of the cleverly designed hydraulic windows/shutters that allow the clubbers upstairs a view of the vista outside.

Starting at the ground floor, there is the wine bar/ mini club, Sangria. One is treated to a typically Spanish experience, curved sculpted pillars covered in graduated mosaic tiles are lit using Martin CX-4’s, to create a textured feel whilst the freeform curved bar has a continually colour changing central drinks station, courtesy of a Martin Pro 400. Plush red velvet seating surrounds part of the periphery of the venue, which mutates into an area referred to as a cocoon. The cocoon houses one of four pods, circular structures housing Martin Minimac Profiles, the others being in the main bar area. These pods are linked together by the clever use of fibre optic cable and illuminated using Martin QFX150’s, to create an almost neon type of effect but with the benefit of having complementary colours at either end of the fibre. The small stage is catered for by using a combination of MiniMac Profiles & Washes.

Upstairs....Nuovo, the Club.

A seemingly non descript entrance to the main hub of the Nuovo entertainment experience gives no secrets away as to what lies within, neither does the narrow corridor with a convex wall on one side cornice lit using neon again supplemented with Martin Punishers to create the Time Tunnel type of effect. In the Chill out room, the curved walls of this area are treated to a theatrical effect using breakup gobos and delicate colour changes using four MiniMac Profiles.

Passing this small enclave of tranquility brings the guest to the main dance arena, a two storey high area flanked by a bar, a DJ Booth, and two seating areas, low level lighting is provided by five Mac 250’s for mid air effects whilst the main rig handles the fast moving "Disco" lighting. In the main rig, moving and ariel effects come from Martin 918s and Wizards. The ubiquitous strobe power is supplied by Martin Atomic 3000s. A large staircase takes you up to the next level where there are two VIP Rooms and a lounge area overlooking the dance floor, colour for the lounge is provided by Martin CX-4s. Also on this level is an innovative concept that even makes going to the restroom an entertainment experience. The Closet is a washroom with a difference featuring it’s own dance floor and DJ. Totally covered in light blue mosaic tiles, the closet is a cool respite from the pounding heat below, a place to literally chill out….. Minimacs and CX-4’s provide the atmosphere in this area. Sponsorship has also played a part as Salem Cigarettes have provided some additional fixtures in the form of MiniMac Profiles that are dotted around the venue for advertising as well as adding to the main effects lighting.
