MAC 2000s highlight 2001 Miss Universe Pageant, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
June 25, 2001
Supermodels, superstars and super lighting all made the 50th Miss Universe Pageant the most acclaimed ever. Held at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, Puerto Rico on May 11th and broadcast live on the CBS Television Network, this year’s Miss Universe competition featured Martin automated lighting and was seen in more than 120 countries around the world.
Lighting Designer Greg Brunton used 52 MAC 2000 profile spots on the show to illuminate the main stage and numerous competition sets. The powerful 1200-watt luminaires were placed in rows above the stage in a commanding display of power and versatility, the featured players in a multi-colored lighting design that kept in line with the show’s Latin flavored theme. Gobo projection floated across the main stage during the different competitions and onto the various sets including a castle scene complete with palm trees and an elegant skyline set. Martin distributor PLS (Fourth Phase) provided all lighting.
This year’s competition had a distinct Latin flair with performances by Puerto Rico’s own Ricky Martin and Grammy-winning Latin Rock band, La Ley. The production spotlighted the passion and beauty of Latin culture including an opening choreographed tribute to the spirit of Carnival. Supermodels Elle Macpherson and Naomi Campbell co-hosted what is seen as the most sophisticated event to date. Hometown favorite, 20-year-old Denise M. Quiñones August, Miss Puerto Rico 2001, won the competition.
Continuing its entry into TV studios across the USA, NBC’s popular late night talk show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, has permanently installed 4 MAC 2000s at the NBC Studios in Burbank, California.
