Mach Speakers’ Lucky Strike

May 19, 2004

Lucky Strike is a new, trendy bowling alley concept intent on giving the sport of bowling a hip makeover. With an intimate contemporary décor coupled with the latest in lighting, video and Mach sound technology, Lucky Strike offers much more than bowling lanes. A hot nightclub, stylized eatery, cool-mood bar and modern artist showcase complete this unique concept.

Owners Steven and Gillian Foster, together with partner Kevin Troy, excel at adding modern twists to vintage interactive pastimes. In 1998, they pioneered the upscale billiards industry with the launch of Jillian’s (40 locations in 21 states), a chain that also features Mach speaker systems.

With Lucky Strike, America’s first truly upscale bowling lounge is born. The ‘immersive’ environment showcases work by up-and-coming artists projected on floor-to-ceiling high-resolution video screens interspersed with soft neon and ambient lighting. A private room with its own six lanes is also available for parties and events. The concept currently has locations in Hollywood and Orange, California as well as Boston, with a national launch focusing on major markets underway.

With a singularly upscale ambiance uncharacteristic of a bowling alley, state-of-the-art entertainment technology is a key element and a solid sound system is cornerstone to the concept design. Mach speakers were brought to the project because of their durability, cost and application abilities reports Be Media, a full-service audiovisual and lighting systems firm based in El Segundo, California and one of the fastest growing commercial audio, video, lighting and show control system integrators in the United States. Be Media completed the audio, video, lighting and show control components for the Lucky Strike Lanes and is also the preferred media systems provider for the Jillian’s chain.

Mach provided a superior cost-effective and customizable product line to the project.
Mach speakers power the entire facility’s sound system from television programming to digital music and DJ performances. The Hollywood prototype location features Mach Installation Series speakers including six Mach M125i 3-way near field speakers in the bar area; two Mach M182 sub bass speakers in the dance area; ten compact Mach M82i two-way near field speakers in the bowling area; and five compact Mach M72i two-way near field speakers in the private lounge/VIP area. The theme of the facility requires all equipment to be unobtrusive, so the Mach speakers were wall mounted in corners and against pillars. Control is via an AMX touchscreen located in the DJ booth. Power amps are by QSC with a Peavey Media Matrix Audio Processing System. Primary design engineer was Mohammad Ahmadi, President & CEO of Be Media.

Utilizing a single brand for the majority of the audio needs of the facility was very valuable. The wide range of superior Mach products made it an easy choice, reports Be Media, with the features of the Mach line making its application into the design a “no-brainer”. After working with Mach since the advent of the company, Be Media design engineers knew that they would be able to specify the product line into their design without significant issue or research.

The Mach system reportedly works well with the control elements, and there have been no complaints. The facilities have enjoyed great success as a nightclub hotspot and have become a celebrity party destination as well.
