Martin Lights Up Madrid...Royally

June 11, 2004

The event was billed as Spain´s ‘wedding of the century.’ On Saturday May 22nd Crown Prince Felipe, heir to the Spanish throne, and Letizia Ortiz were married in the country´s first royal wedding in nearly a century. The Prince of Asturias and newly crowned Princess of Asturias exchanged vows at Almudena Cathedral in Madrid´s old quarter.

As part of the cultural festivities, the city of Madrid instigated a celebration of its architecture through a temporary City Beautification project. The project consisted of lighting a number of culturally important buildings and monuments including the Puerta de Alcalá, the fountain in the Plaza de Cibeles, monuments to Neptune and Apollo, the Correos building (Post Office) and Museo Nacional Del Prado.

Cinelux, Ecler, Martin
The experienced team of entertainment and architectural lighting professionals at company Cinelux SA was behind the remarkable success, boasting a technical and human resource team unequalled in Spain. Martin’s Spanish distributor Ecler also played a key role in what has been called one of the biggest temporary lighting installations in the world.

The Cinelux technical team, which included top domestic and international experts, successfully incorporated the latest technology from leading brands in entertainment lighting. In terms of the role played, as well as fixture quantity, Martin certainly stood out. Martin MAC 2000s with dichroic litho gobos and MAC 600 moving heads constituted the basic lighting element with over 600 MAC moving head fixtures used altogether.

Royal success
The response among citizens of the capital to the outstanding lighting overwhelmed the Madrid City Council, so much in fact that in order to avoid spontaneous gatherings of spectators anxious to see the unparalleled spectacle, it was suggested on the eve of the event that the lighting display be called off, thus avoiding foreseeable traffic and security problems.

Without a doubt, the Madrid experience marks the beginning of a new and exciting era in entertainment and architectural lighting trends in Spain.
