Montreal’s Newtown Off to a Fast Start
December 17, 2001
Newtown is a stylish resto-bar located in downtown Montreal with lounge, restaurant, terrace and dance club all in one.
Surprisingly lacking of race driving memorabilia (the club is owned by Formula One driver Jacques Villeneuve), Newtown is not your typical sports hang out but rather a classy and comfortable venue. Impeccably planned and designed, Newtown is Jacques Villeneuve’s dream.
Lighting designer for Newtown is Montreal native Francois Roupinian. He and his team used 10 months experimenting with various lighting fixtures, testing how each light reacted on different materials, and incorporating lighting into various settings and decors. The result is a venue whose signature is an exceptional lighting design.
Many different moods and atmospheres are experienced throughout the various levels of the building with the nightclub lighting being very experimental. There is no conventional lighting but 24 compact moving lights instead – Martin MiniMACs - and large mirrors from which to reflect the light. The MiniMACs hang above the dance floor from a circular truss and were chosen for their size, functionality and affordability.
Newtown opened in early June 2001 just prior to the 2001 Montreal Grand Prix. Martin’s Canadian distributor Erikson Pro supplied all Martin lighting.
