Queensway Bay Project, Long Beach, California
March 26, 1999
The ambitious $650 million Queensway Bay Project has all the makings of a successful venture – prime location, popular attractions, open space and a population base of 13 million people within a 90 kilometer radius.
Queensway Bay is 300 acres of prime oceanfront land comprising Rainbow Harbor, Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific, the 344,000 square foot Long Beach Convention Center, an amphitheater and abundant park space. The goal of the project is to establish Long Beach as the number one beach destination in California.
The centerpiece of the project is the new Rainbow Harbor, a modern commercial waterfront and "the first modern harbor in the country to be situated within a landscaped park." The harbor will accommodate all types of commercial boats from tall ships and historic boats to diving boats and fishing vessels.
Rainbow Harbor gets its name from its circular shape and colored lights along the water´s edge. Martin has helped add more atmosphere to the harbor by installing 55 RoboColor Pro 400 color changers onto flag poles which stretch half a mile along the harbor. Lighting design was created by Lighting Design Alliance of Long Beach.
Historic Rainbow Pier once stood in this location and will be recreated with a multi-level complex of restaurants and shops. Eventually water taxi service will be available to shuttle visitors to the Queen Mary across the bay. Up to 5 million visitors are expected each year and the project is expected to create some 3,500 jobs!
