Royal "Performance" for Queen Musical
September 12, 2002
For those looking for something entirely new in the world of theatre, the highly anticipated Queen musical We Will Rock You arrived in London’s West End on May 14. Nearly six years in development, the high-energy show is a blend of science fiction, comedy and music that has proved the perfect theatrical platform for the use of intelligent lighting. The stage play is a tribute to the legendary band Queen and front man Freddie Mercury.
Selling out nightly at the Dominion Theatre, the show brings together a production and design team with experience in some of the biggest international theatre productions and rock tours.
One of those lighting veterans, Lighting Designer Willie Williams, has produced a lighting concept for the show that reflects the scale and spectacle that marked Queen’s live performances. More typically befitting of a rock concert (the show features some 30 Queen hits) the Martin rig includes 49 Atomic strobes, 38 MAC 2000s, 18 MAC 600 eNT, 4 MAC 2000 Performances and 4 Jem ZR33 smoke machines. Stage Electrics has supplied the total lighting rig including the new MAC 2000 Performances, which made their West End debut in the show.
Created by Ben Elton and Queen, We Will Rock You takes place in a futuristic world where rock music is banned and globalization is complete. Following its premiere in London, the show is expected to open internationally in the near future.
