UK’s Third Annual Move Festival

September 13, 2004

Boasting a smaller, more personal atmosphere, Move Festival at Lancashire County Cricket Ground in Manchester, unlike most other festivals, has only a single stage. But one stage is all you need.

Held from 8th to 11th July, the four-day event sponsored by Virgin Trains is relatively young, only 3-years old, and describes itself as the country’s biggest urban-based festival. For the twenty thousand people that attended, an impressive line up awaited: The Cure, Madness, Pixies, Morrissey, Stereophonics and many more.

Paul Normandale of Lite Alternative was the festival’s creative designer, and also handled lighting design and operation for Pixies and Madness. He operated a MAC rig for Pixies via a Maxxyz lighting console with Playback Wing. Glenn Johnson of Lite Alternative and various support band lighting designers ran the support bands off the Maxxyz as well. “Maxxyz was an opportunity for incoming LDs to try the console hands on in a real situation,” Paul stated.

Production company Lite Alternative supplied the single stage with 12 MAC 2000 Wash, 12 MAC 2000 Profile E, 6 MAC 550 and 8 MAC 500 profile spots, 18 MAC 600 washlights and 8 Atomic strobes. Haze effects were from a pair of Jem ZR 33 Hi-Mass working with Jem AF-1 fans. Atmospheric fog was from a powerful Jem Roadie X-Stream effects generator (used for The Cure and Pixies), working with Jem AF-1 fans.

Glenn Johnson and Mike Oates of Lite Alternative, and Simon Allan of Martin UK, completed lighting for the remaining support bands with Glenn as board op and Mike as crew chief. Other LDs included Max Comwell for Morrissey, Ben Holdsworth for Stereophonics and Abbey Rosen Holmes for The Cure.

A special VIP room also featured Martin equipment with two MAC 250 Entours and two Mania DC-1 aqua effects providing the atmospheric visuals.
