White Ice, Blue Frost at Teddy Bear Affair
December 05, 2003
Charity took center ice recently at the Children’s Aid Foundation’s 17th Annual Teddy Bear Affair in Toronto. Held in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Nov. 22nd, the charity event is recognized as one of the region’s most significant social happenings with many of the city’s most influential members in attendance. This year’s event, titled “White Ice, Blue Frost,” transported guests to an unforgettable winter wonderland.
The event was designed and produced by Bartnes and Associates for the Children’s Aid Foundation and featured a real ice rink while over 30 suppliers, 100 crew and 50 pots of coffee helped make the event a reality. Hosted by Chris Sheppard, the night included skating performances by top Canadian figure skaters Kurt Browning, Josée Chouinard and Brian Orser.
Production, lighting design and operation were by Eric Bartnes with assistance from Mike Nolan. Eric created an exceptional lighting environment using 16 Martin MAC 2000 Profile and 8 Martin MAC 250, along with 250 conventional fixtures and other automated lights. Six snow machines were also used in keeping with the winter theme.
Guests were treated to a number of special moments throughout the evening, including a white ice and blue frost themed silent auction and champagne cocktail reception followed by a 50´ Kabuki drop and pyro waterfall into the main room. “The opening look was really something special,” commented Eric, who described it as “a Chanel inspired open white ‘all hands on deck’ ballyhoo, which then settled into the OH! so pleasing blue wash.” Lights were supplied by Christie Lites through Martin Canada with staging and towers by Optex, audio and room drape by Midnite Hour, and 50 of the finest freelance crew from the city of Toronto technical gene pool.
Besides the auction and entertainment, the evening included a gourmet 5-course dinner and one-of-a-kind Tiffany & Co. Bear Raffle, a reminder of the children who benefit from the evening’s success.
The Children’s Aid Foundation is a registered charity that raises funds and supports initiatives for the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Its mission is to improve the lives of abused and neglected children through education, enrichment and prevention.
