450+ MAC Luminaires for Singapore National Day Parade 2007
October 12, 2007
Singapore celebrated the 42nd anniversary of its independence on August 9, 2007. Held in Marina Bay on the world’s largest floating platform, some 420 MAC 2000 Wash and 48 MAC 2000 Profiles were used to bathe the venue in spectacular looks of celebratory color.
Lighting supplier was Showtec Group of Singapore with sub-contract support from Hamburg-based PROCON Event Engineering who provided approximately 360 of the MAC 2000 Washes.
Customized challenge
The Singapore National Day Parade is produced by the Singapore Defence Force. Held annually, this was the first time the event has been held in Marina Bay. Lighting designer for the event was Paul Collison.
“The world’s largest floating platform (120m x 80m) was built to house the stage whilst a 30,000 seat grandstand was built on the shore,” Paul explains. “This made things quite difficult as lighting positions were limited to the platform and the grandstand. Twelve towers were built on the floating platform with three to four pods (12 moving lights) per tower. A scaffold along the back of the grandstand held the stage front lighting and also doubled as an audience backlighting position.
“So with difficult positions and throws of up to 150m there was only one choice of wash light. The MAC 2000 Washes were used to wash the stage, 180 from Front of House with the remaining 240 on stage acting as a side wash.
“The 2K Washes performed admirably, requiring much less maintenance than expected. The fixtures endured high temperatures, almost daily rain and excessive humidity.
“The techs from PROCON and Showtech of Singapore were fantastic and kept the system working on or near 100% every day.”
