Chris Tomlin “How Great is Our God” Tour
June 01, 2007
2007 Gospel Music Award Male Vocalist and Artist of the Year Chris Tomlin toured across the U.S. earlier this year beneath a full Martin rig of MAC 2000 Profiles, MAC 600 washlights and MAC 500 profile spots.
Jon Weir of Majestic Productions Inc. of Indiana designed the lighting, video, and set elements for the “How Great is Our God” tour with lighting supply by Majestic. Jon added MAC 2000 Washes to the rig for a DVD shoot. “I chose Martin fixtures because of their reliability, quality, and they had all the features I needed for this tour,” he stated. “The MAC 2000 is a great fixture, end of story. We played several different sized venues. The M2Ks were the perfect hard edge fixture no matter what venue we were in. There is always plenty of horsepower and the colors are amazing. I’ve used just about every fixture on the market, but I’ve always loved the color mixing system in the MAC 2000 series. It’s very even with no hot spot in the color.”
Jon designed a ‘misguided V’ truss structure on stage, basically a large V with some truss pieces sticking out. “The layout gives me lots of depth to the rig,” he commented. “It’s a fairly compact rig but looks much bigger and complex than it really is.” Jon also had a straight DS truss that was loaded with fixtures.
“The fixtures held up incredibly well. We had the normal maintenance that every tour has but the fixtures did an incredible job day in and day out. The MAC 600s are an older fixture but they are bulletproof. You can’t break them. They are very consistent and work every day with no issues at all. There aren’t many fixtures you can take outdoors, have them rained on, dry them out and fire them right up. In my opinion, it’s still one of the best fixtures ever made in terms of reliability.”
Jon mixed lighting with video using LED strips. “Lots of tours are using LED’s in creative ways, but this is one of the only ones that I know of that is using hi-def LED products as well as negative space at the same time. The LED’s are at a 10mm pixel pitch but the spacing on the strip is closer to 6”. This gave us lots of empty space and created a truly unique look on stage.”
