Cranbrook Union Windmill gives Martin Exteriors a whirl

May 29, 2000

Built in 1814, the Cranbrook Union Windmill is the largest and arguably the finest Smock Windmill in England. Worked until 1958, it was latterly taken over by Kent County Council, who carried out a full restoration in 1960.

Following a lottery grant for refurbishment, the Association chose Martin Exterior 600´s to colorfully illuminate the mill. A trial took place on the evening of Tuesday 4th April, which was a great success and well supported by the local community.

As part of the Living Light range, the Martin Exterior 600 is an inherently reliable colorwash luminaire especially designed for outdoor applications. Housed in a durable, weatherproof aluminium casing, the Exterior 600 brings a wide variety of structures to life, after dark, with a spectacular array of intense color combinations.

The Union Windmill is still owned by the Council and is opened regularly to the public by the Cranbrook Windmill Association, a group of local volunteers who have put the windmill back to full working order, grinding wheat as it was done 120 years ago.
