Martin FiberSource Add That Something Extra to Unique Artwork
January 29, 2008
Climb aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Freestyle Cruising vessel Norwegian Gem and you can’t help but notice a unique artwork hanging from the atrium’s ceiling. Designed and custom made by the Cristallux company of Waldachtal, Germany, and created to emulate a gem stone – a sliced amethyst – this eye-catching ceiling light is the centerpiece of the ship’s all important welcoming public space.
The handmade art piece is made of a special synthetic material and is made even more dynamic by ten Martin FiberSource QFX150 fiber optic illuminators. “The Martin FiberSource illuminators suited our needs for this project and we had good experience with this protector on previous projects,” states Thomas Schindler of Cristallux of his decision to install the fixtures.
The FiberSource QFX150 is an automated 150 W color-changing luminaire for illuminating fiber optic cables in permanent installations. It features a color wheel with 9 interchangeable colors and smooth, full-range mechanical dimming. The Martin illuminators are located above the artwork and Thomas reports no major problems with the installation.
The artwork weighs approximately 3 tons and is roughly 17 meters long by 4.5 meters wide. The thermoplastic materials of the artwork have been surface treated with a high degree of consistency, resulting in a unique radiancy. Cristallux has specialized in the development and production of unique lights, diffusers and illuminated mirrors for more than 40 years.
