Wandsworth's own Cancer Resource Centre offers a pioneering model for the future, according to world-renowned cancer doctor Professor Karol Sikora of Imperial College. His appointment as President of the Centre was announced at the Centre's 25th anniversary celebration on 27 February at Battersea Power Station, attended by stars and users and supporters of the centre - and accompanied by a rare lighting up of the chimneys of the power station.
Martin Professional contributed to the evening’s celebration by creating an atmosphere in light over Battersea Power Station. Martin products used to illuminate this event were eight Exterior 600 washlights, which were placed on the flat roof of the power station to light the side face of two of the large chimneys.
Peter Western at Martin Professional commented, “We were approached to offer some lighting for this event and were happy to be involved with the opportunity to light an iconic building in London for a good cause. We decided to concentrate on the two chimneys which were the most visible to the participants given the scale of the building. We were very happy with the results.”
Tony Browne, Managing Director at Martin Professional added, “It was great to have the design input from Mr Conor O’Donahue of Roger Preston & Partners, consulting Engineers, who knows the building very well.”
"As a health professional dealing with cancer patients, I have been consistently impressed with the quality of support that the Centre has been able to give," said Professor Sikora. "It has acted as an innovative role model for other centres around the country."
A trio of prominent actresses - Geraldine James, Angharad Rees and Genevieve O'Reilly - joined the centre to show their support for its work.
Geraldine James, who is Patron of the Centre, said, "Many hospitals are still not in a position to offer the Centre’s holistic approach, range of services or its supportive environment. I am delighted to join the Cancer Resource Centre to celebrate their success in supporting, informing and providing complementary therapies to people whose lives have been touched by cancer in South West London."
25 years ago the Battersea Cancer Support Group was started in the front room of their flat on Battersea Rise, by Hazel and Roger Potter. Roger and Hazel wanted to introduce people to the many ways in which they could regain a sense of control and improve the quality of their life while living with cancer.
The Centre, now situated in York Road, Battersea, SW11, is still innovating – you can see their list of resources on their website: www.cancer-resource-centre.org.uk
