Masters of Illusion: Bandit, Martin and LD Seth Jackson

September 20, 2000

In an effort to create a better environment to facilitate a large convention, Bandit Lites, Inc. and Lighting Designer Seth Jackson were hired to become Masters of Illusion. The main driving force behind the design was to create ambient lighting for the massive space in which the convention was being held (Georgia World Congress Center). Bandit and Seth chose to use 95 Martin MAC 500’s, 215 Martin MAC 600 (Wides) and 95 Martin MAC 600 (Narrows).

The main goal of this ambient lighting was to make the area feel less like a large chasm and present a more soothing, comfortable feel.

Michael O’Keefe of TPI envisioned the initial concept for the design. This concept was to take the lighting and create the illusion of daylight and other environmental nuances. O’Keefe then proposed the concept to the convention organizer and got approval for the project. Bandit Lites was then contracted to work with the idea with guidance from both O’Keefe and Lighting Designer Seth Jackson

The trussing that lines the perimeter of the room was treated with cycloramas and lit with numerous Martin MAC 600 Wides. The cueing sequence on these fixtures was designed to represent the cycle of daylight - sunrise in the East to sunset in the West - all in near real time.
