Munich’s P1 Club Setting New Standard in Lighting Design
April 25, 2003
P1, one of the most famous and successful clubs in Europe, features a completely new interior and lighting design after an extensive renovation. An important part of that renovation was a new, intelligent Martin lighting system.
Architect for the project was Munich’s Laurent Brückner and his team. Matteo Thun, a famous interior designer from Milan, was responsible for the new look. The project was completed in close cooperation with lighting designer Werner Memmel and Martin dealer WML GmbH.
Werner Memmel, a well-known LD with extensive experience in bar and discotheque lighting, was responsible for some very effective ideas in the former P1 club. He changed for example the lighting in a bar area which resulted in immediate popularity and increased sales. His ideas for the current lighting design have proved just as effective.
Guests shown in the best light
Everyone involved in the reconstruction agreed that the design of the new P1 should be as unobtrusive as possible with focus placed on communication and the guests. “The guests at P1 are the jewelry,” states designer Matteo Thun, “the guarantee for decoration and spirit of the times. This generates the typical P1-feeling.” In order to make the “jewelry” shine, the lighting design was an important part of the whole concept with guests shown in the best light.
Fiber optic
Werner Memmel and his team had the complete club in focus during their work. “The entire project is the show - not just the dancefloor”, explains Memmel as the central theme of his work. The project became one of the largest light fiber projects ever completed in a bar. The club is equipped with a variety of intelligent lights including Martin FiberSource CMY projectors which transmit a variety of colors via 7 kilometers of fiber optic to 1500 light points (with about 100 km of singular fibers). All walls, bars, ceilings and display boxes can be illuminated with spherical light.
Color changing light in all rooms
Martin products are an important element of the lighting design, providing dynamic illumination in hundreds of different colors in all rooms. Lighting products include 7 FiberSource CMY 150, 4 MiniMAC Wash, 4 MiniMAC Profile, 2 MAC 300 wash lights, one Cyclo fluorescent color changer and one Wizard effect light.
This variable lighting design offers Munich’s clubbers a dynamic and interesting architectural experience. Moreover, the lighting system can be used for special events. For example, companies now have the possibility to hold parties in their own company colors.
Cell Room
A very special area is the so-called “cell room. Equipped with mobile phones and illuminated with four Martin Alien 05 recessed color changers, it gives guests the chance to make a phone call without being disturbed.
